Sacramento School District 80% Minority

JUNE 29, 2015 5:35 PM
(News Review) – The fourth most diverse school district in the nation is finally adding an ethnic studies graduation requirement—in 2020.
The Sacramento City Unified School District’s Board of Trustees unanimously approved the proposal from its Student Advisory Council on June 4. The proposal will create an ethnic studies pilot program for fall 2016.
In collaboration with community organizations, local university professors and college students, the council cited research that minority students feel culturally disconnected from the standard curriculum in high school classes, particularly in literature and history classes. Students also reported little interaction between different ethnic groups on campus.
Approximately 80 percent of district students identify as students of color. There’s also a significant English-learner population—with at least 44 recognized languages—and large European immigrant populations to boot.
Jonathan Tran, an organizer with Hmong Innovating Politics and a past school board candidate, worked on the ethnic studies campaign. He said such courses improve campus climate and graduation rates.
“Students begin to see themselves in the curriculum,” he said. “They become more invested in the subject they’re studying.”
In a last-minute amendment to the proposal, the new requirement will be monitored by the district’s High School Graduation Task Force, a relatively new committee that hasn’t been meeting.
The task force will be responsible for making sure ethnic studies courses satisfy graduation requirements, and incorporating ethnic-studies elements in classes across the board.
Director Theresa McEwen said the task force is currently on hiatus and awaiting new assessments from Common Core implementation.

Illegal Alien Sex Offenders Released into Seattle Neighborhoods

JUNE 29, 2015 5:43 PM
(KIROTV) – After digging through hundreds of ZIP codes, KIRO 7 found 11 convicted sex offenders in the country illegally living across western Washington neighborhoods.
The government has tried to deport most of these people, but a Supreme Court ruling requires they be released after six months in jail, if their home country won’t take them back.
KIRO 7 obtained sources through the Senate Judiciary Committee: a list of every ZIP code in the country that some offender called home at the time of release.
In the Seattle area, sex offenders who are undocumented were dropped off from Tacoma to Bellingham. See a map and list below for a breakdown.
  • 98003, Federal Way
  • 98011, Bothell
  • 98023, Federal Way
  • 98032, Kent
  • 98036 Lynnwood
  • 98092, Auburn
  • 98104, Downtown Seattle
  • 98108, Seattle
  • 98203, Everett
  • 98226, Bellingham
  • 98421, Tacoma
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials say they can’t and don’t track where the offenders are after they’re released into neighborhoods, documents show.
Mark Krikorian from the Center of Immigration Studies says the government can do more. He wants the State Department to deny visas to countries that won’t accept deportations.

Rush: Christians Are the Left’s True Target

JUNE 29, 2015 5:50 PM
(Rush Limbaugh) – BEGIN TRANSCRIPT
RUSH: McComb County in Michigan.  This is Sue.  Welcome to the EIB Network.  Hi.
CALLER:  Hi, Rush.  Thanks so much for your show and everything you do.  My question is, since the Supreme Court made their ruling, I’d like to ask you how many gays do you think will be demanding to be married in a mosque?
RUSH:  I don’t think any.
CALLER:  And why might that be?
RUSH:  Well, the truth of the matter is that the gay community in America does not see militant Islam as discriminating against them.
CALLER:  That’s true.
RUSH:  Militants Islamists have not denied them happiness and good times and getting married and all.  It’s Christians.  It’s Christians.  You might say, “But do they not know that homosexuals are put to death in Muslim countries?”  Well, but it’s not happening in America.  We don’t live in those countries.
CALLER:  Exactly.
RUSH:  They’re not gonna go. They’re scared.  They’re not gonna go into a mosque and demand marriage.  It’s not what this is about.  This is not designed to take down Islam.  The target’s not Islam.  The target is not religion per se.  The target is Christians.  And I’m glad you called, because it’s an excellent point.

Ted Cruz: ‘Voters Would Be Astonished’ To Know What GOP Senators Say In Private

JUNE 29, 2015 6:06 PM
(Daily Caller) – Texas Sen. Ted Cruz writes in his new book that conservative voters would be “astonished” if they knew what Republican senators were really doing and saying in private meetings on Capitol Hill.
“During my time in the Senate, I’ve been amazed how many senators pose one way in public—as fiscal conservatives or staunch Tea Party supporters, for example—and then in private do little or nothing to advance those principles,” Cruz writes in his new book, “A Time For Truth.”
“Indeed, if transcripts of our Senate lunches were released to the public, I think many voters would be astonished,” the Republican presidential candidate writes.
In the introduction to this book, Cruz specifically criticizes the Republican leadership in the Senate for how they dealt with the issue of raising the debt ceiling in early 2014.
“For months leading up to this moment, Republican leaders had pledged to their constituents that when it came time to raise the federal debt limit, they would demand meaningful spending reforms from this president,” Cruz wrote. “Rest assured, we were told, the Republicans would insist on it!”
But that wasn’t going to work, so the GOP leadership came up with another idea.
“For decades, the ordinary procedure in the Senate has been that in order to move to proceed to take up a debt ceiling increase, 60 senators must vote in favor of the motion,” he said.
Cruz said the leadership asked senators to agree to a 50-vote threshold for the debt ceiling legislation.
The GOP leadership, Cruz writes, wanted Republicans to agree to this so “Democrats would then have the votes to raise the debt ceiling on their own. We could all vote no. This way, we could return home and tell the voters that we had opposed raising the debt ceiling, right after consenting to let it happen.”
“Most senators seemed perfectly fine with the leadership’s proposal,” Cruz writes. “There were nods and murmurs of assent.”
Cruz said that for him, it “was too much.”
“I raised my hand and said, ‘There’s no universe in which I can consent to that.’”
He said he explained to the lawmakers: “If I were to affirmatively consent to making it easier for Democratic Senate leader Harry Reid to add trillions in debt—with no spending reforms whatsoever—I think it would be dishonest and unfaithful to the voters who elected me.”
His opposition to the maneuver made many GOP colleagues upset, he said.
“In the two years I’ve been in the Senate, nothing I have said or done has engendered more venom and animosity from my fellow Republicans than the simple objection I made that afternoon,” Cruz recalled.
Cruz explained: “What infuriated them was that by objecting to the unanimous consent deal they had cut, it forced those Republicans who wanted the debt ceiling raised to actually admit so in public with their recorded vote. It prevented them from misleading their constituents.”
Because he and his closest ally, Utah Sen. Mike Lee, refused to agree, Republicans would have to join Democrats to pass the debt ceiling increase. But this Senate vote was different, Cruz recalled.
“For this particular vote, however, the clerk was instructed not to read the votes aloud as they were cast,” he wrote. “That meant the votes could be kept secret, so that the leadership could work on getting enough Republicans who voted against the debt ceiling motion to quietly switch their votes without anyone knowing.”
It eventually passed with 12 Republican senators voting with Democrats.
“The final result was that President Obama, Harry Reid, and House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, with the active complicity of the Republican leadership, were able to add trillions of dollars to the national debt—a bill that we are passing along to our children and grandchildren—while doing nothing whatsoever to control future spending,” Cruz wrote.

Feds May House Transgender Illegals with Their Preferred Sex

JUNE 29, 2015 9:17 PM
(AP) – Immigration authorities will consider housing transgender detainees based on the gender they identify with in the wake of criticism about detention conditions for the population, officials said on Monday.
Detention staff should consider transgender detainees’ preferences when making decisions about housing and clothing and what pronouns should be used, Immigration and Customs Enforcement said in new guidelines for the treatment of transgender detainees.
The agency will start tracking data for transgender detainees, train detention staff and draft individual detention plans for transgender detainees to deal with issues ranging from hormone therapy to safety, said Andrew Lorenzen-Strait, ICE’s deputy assistant director of custody programs.
“ICE will allow for the placement of a transgender woman consistent with their gender identity, meaning that a transgender woman could be with biological females,” said Lorenzen-Strait, who was also appointed as a national coordinator for issues related to gay, lesbian and transgender detainees.
The move did little to quell criticism from advocates who have urged the agency to release more transgender immigration detainees, citing their increased risk of sexual assault in detention. Last week, a heckler interrupted President Barack Obama’s remarks at a gay pride event in Washington to protest the detention and deportation of gay, lesbian and transgender immigrants.
“This is all interesting on paper, to say the least, but we need to see how this actually plays out,” said Raffi Freedman-Gurspan, a policy adviser for the National Center for Transgender Equality. “We don’t think these folks should be in detention centers, period.”
The guidance comes three years after the Department of Justice issued similar rules for transgender inmates. But even now many jails and prisons aren’t following the rules and continue to house transgender inmates based on their genitalia or place them in solitary confinement purportedly for their protection, said Carl Takei, a staff attorney at the American Civil Liberties Union’s National Prison Project.
“Most prisons and jails are still in the Dark Ages about these issues,” Takei said.
Getting the rules put into practice may be tough for immigration officials, who house most detainees at contract facilities, Takei said.
ICE currently has about 60 transgender detainees. About 25 are housed in a special unit in Santa Ana, California, for transgender women and gay men. The rest are housed in different facilities across the country, mostly with the general population and consistent with their biological sex, Lorenzen-Strait said.
The agency currently houses about 31,000 detainees a day, he said.
Under the latest guidance, the agency said officials should consider a host of factors before detaining an individual, including transgender identity.
Given the population’s small numbers and increased risk, transgender immigrants should be offered alternatives to detention, said Aaron Morris, legal director of Immigration Equality.
“When you’re thinking about who should absolutely be released, pregnant women, people with severe health problems, transgender individuals, there are certain populations that weigh so heavily in favor of release that it is dumbfounding the knee-jerk reaction is always to detain,” Morris said. “It’s not in anyone’s best interest.”
But immigration enforcement advocate Jessica Vaughan, who is director of policy studies at the Center for Immigration Studies, said she worries that gender identity could trump other factors, such as flight risk, when making decisions about detention.
“In practice, this could become a double standard for transgender individuals that seems unprecedented,” Vaughan wrote in an email.

Pentagon Urged to Boot Chaplains who Oppose ‘Gay’ Marriage

JUNE 30, 2015 7:42 AM
(WND) – In the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s decision to redefine marriage in all 50 states, the Pentagon is now being urged to “cleanse itself” of chaplains who refuse to support same-sex marriage.
Activist Mikey Weinstein, president of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, is demanding the U.S. military conduct a purge of chaplains who holds to the traditional teaching of homosexuality and marriage espoused by the first commander in chief, George Washington.
Weinstein claims chaplains who are “maintaining the state of antagonism between their religion and the sexual/gender identities of service members” have no business serving in the military.
While Weinstein frequently calls for the court-martialing of military members who attempt to share their faith with others, he is now calling for an entire class of chaplains to be fired regardless of whether their beliefs affect their job performance or not.
Read Weinstein’s Op-ed below:
The clouds are parting and the sun is beginning to shine today, as great arching rainbows signal the looming departure of a long, violent storm. As anybody who has turned on the television or logged onto the net knows, today’s Supreme Court decision has cracked across America’s sky with the tremendous energy of a lightning bolt, lifting aspirations and opening vistas for the LGBTQ community.
Oh, but the ruling doesn’t simply apply to civilians alone – the Supreme Court decision will permit same-sex marriage not only in all 50 states in the union, but on ALL United States Military bases as well. For the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, the only organization devoted solely to fighting the scourge of fundamentalist Christian extremism, the monumental importance of this occasion CANNOT be overstated enough. Indeed, our LGBTQ client base of over 900 servicemembers has been ecstatic, and I can scarcely write this opinion piece due to the fact that my phone is absolutely ringing off the hook with phone calls from exuberant servicemembers. Expect to hear wedding bells ring joyously across chapels as same-sex couples are joined in matrimony at military installations across the globe!
Of course, not all are celebrating the ruling. The American Family Association’s Bryan Fischer (a big fan of yours truly) has unleashed a torrent of hilariously outraged tweets about “Satan dancing with delight” and how, “from a moral standpoint,” June 26 is equivalent to September 11, 2001.  One Texan preacher has even sunk to the hideously pathetic depthsof threatening self-immolation in reaction to the marriage equality ruling. Glenn Beck is promising the martyrdom and self-sacrifice (sound familiar?) of tens of thousands of pastors. Even a solid contingent of right-wing African-American Christian clergy are having a field day displaying their abject shamelessness, pledging “to do the same thing we did for the civil rights movement,” – basically, to begin a campaign of civil disobedience signaling their anger at “the politicians and courts…. [taking] God out of this country.”
Imagine the grinding teeth and anguished moans emanating from the benighted quarters of Christian fundamentalism within the U.S. military! What will become of their once-ironclad dominance of fundamentalist Christian privilege within the Department of Defense? After all, this same Pentagon allows the notorious anti-gay bigot and charlatan “gay conversion therapy expert” Dr. Mike Rosebush to retain employment as a civilian leader at the United States Air Force Academy. The armed forces chaplaincy is deserving of additional scrutiny – witness the fact that bitterly hateful homophobic extremists like USAF Chaplain (Capt.) Sonny Hernandez, 445th Airlift Wing Chaplain Corps was named as “Officer of the Year” just this past April. Hernandez is just one of many chaplains who feel so threatened by equality that they will bitch and moan at every opportunity about a absolutely absurd and fictitious “hostile work environment for Christians” within the military.
These pernicious bigots must stop trying to claim “Christian Victimization” when, in point of fact, what they are seeing “Christian Equalization”.
What truly troubles these cretinous sentinels of vile prejudice and hate-mongering bigotry is the fact that this ruling will go down historically as the watershed moment which may indeed shatter the spine of the Religious Right in the U.S. military, whose prior viselike grip over the chaplaincy has formed the key obstacle to social progress within the Armed Forces. Cry us a river!
Nobody is arguing that these losers don’t have a right to their religious beliefs – that right is sacrosanct, and is backed by the highest law of the land – the U.S. Constitution. However, as long as these faux “victimized” chaplains insist on accepting a government paycheck from us, the American taxpayers, while nurturing and maintaining the state of antagonism between their religion and the sexual/gender identities of servicemembers, then they don’t belong in the military. At this stage, the only honorable thing that these losers can do is to fold up their uniforms, turn in their papers, and get the hell out of the American military chaplaincy. If they are unwilling or too cowardly to do so, then the Department of Defense must expeditiously cleanse itself of the intolerant filth that insists on lingering in the ranks of our armed forces.
The extreme religious right’s resistance to today’s landmark Supreme Court ruling reminds me of the almost identical opposition, also speciously based on bible-based religious grounds, which President Truman faced from within the U.S. military when issuing Executive Order No. 9981, Desegregating the Military on July 26, 1948.  Order 9981 stated “It is hereby declared to be the policy of the President that there shall be equality of treatment and opportunity for all persons in the armed services without regard to race, color, religion, or national origin”. If it was wrong for military chaplains to protest Truman’s desegregation order in 1948 (and it obviously WAS), then it is just as equally wrong now for them to oppose gay marriage/rights in today’s military.
The struggle doesn’t end here. Illustrating the towering challenges to justice that lie ahead, the Supreme Court ruling that signaled the triumphant right to marriage equality comes on the heels of the tragic suicide of U.S. Air Force Veteran Jess Shipps, a 31-year old transgendered woman who was an active leader in SPARTA, a support and advocacy group for transgendered servicemembers. Her death was largely borne of the type of bigotry enshrined into Department of Defense regulations, specifically DoD Instruction 6130.03, which deems those undergoing gender-confirming treatment to be medically non-adaptable to military environments.
However, today we celebrate. Witness how the tide turns when those suffering from oppression persistently demand and fight for their rights, regardless of the hatred and animosity they face as a result of their unwillingness to tolerate the intolerable! Lady Liberty is truly beaming with PRIDE today.

Brawl Breaks Out In Front Of South Carolina Statehouse Over Confederate Flag

JUNE 30, 2015 7:44 AM
(CBS News) – One man has been arrested after a fight over the Confederate flag in front of the South Carolina Statehouse.
The brawl started about 7:15 p.m. Monday when about a dozen vehicles with Confederate flag supporters pulled up in front of the Statehouse and stopped in the middle of the street, Public Safety Department spokeswoman Sherri Iacobelli said in a statement.
About 10 of the flag supporters clashed with about 30 people who were on the Statehouse grounds protesting the flag, the statement said.
“The blood on my face, the blood in my teeth, the blood on my hands is no comparison to the Southern blood that runs through my veins,” Joe Linder told CBS News.
Linder, who was hit during the fight, supports the Confederate flag and says “racism has no part” in it.
“I’m gonna tell you one thing, I ain’t sitting down; this’ll just make me walk taller,” he told CBS News.
About 50 officers responded and contained the clash, including officers from the Bureau of Protective Services assigned to the Statehouse, as well as Columbia police, University of South Carolina officers and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Two blocks of the street in front of the Statehouse was closed for a brief time during the disturbance.
Sydney Baldwin told CBS News the fight began when someone took his flag.
“I jumped out of my truck,” Baldwin said. “That was all I did, was grab my flag and I got hit in the side.”
Nicholas Thompson, 25, of Irmo, South Carolina, has been charged with disorderly conduct. It wasn’t clear if he has an attorney.
The Confederate flag has been a focus of protests since the fatal shooting of nine people at a historic black church in Charleston on June 17.
Public Safety Director Leroy Smith told reporters it was unfortunate that Columbia had a fight when there have been no problems reported in Charleston, where the shooting occurred.
The suspect in the Charleston shooting, Dylann Storm Roof, appears in a number of photographs online with the Confederate flag, prompting calls for removal of the flag from in front of the Statehouse.
South Carolina lawmakers are expected next week to consider proposals to take the flag down and move it to a museum.
The flag has flown at the Statehouse since the 1960s. It was removed from the Statehouse dome and placed at a Confederate Soldier Monument in front of the Statehouse in 2000.
