Iran will obtain threshold capabilities to develop a nuclear bomb, and the pending deal merely postpones Iran’s development of deadly weapons, sources say.
News agencies reported on Tuesday that Iran and the US were making progress towards finalizing a deal regarding Iran’s nuclear program.
Iran will obtain threshold capabilities to develop a nuclear bomb, and the deal merely postpones Iran’s development of such weapons, sources say..
Iran and the US have agreed to resume their talks next week after a successful; session in Geneva.
“These were very serious, useful and constructive discussions. We have made some progress, but we still have a long way to go. We did very much sharpen up some of the tough issues so we can work to resolution,” a senior US official is quoted by Reuters as saying.
Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon released a statement regarding these reports, decrying the proposed deal as a threat to the West, and specifically Israel. “The deal with Iran, as it is now being consolidated, is a danger to peace in the Western world and threatens the security of the State of Israel,” the statement read.
Severe Blow to Western Interests
“Every deal that will be signed between the West and this messianic and apocalyptic regime will strike a severe blow to Western and Israeli interests and will allow Iran to become a nuclear threshold state and continue its terror activities,” Ya’alon declared.
Iran has emerged victorious from the negotiations with the P5+1 powers, he said. “Iran came into these negotiations from a point of weakness and great fear of economic collapse as a result of the sanctions. The deal now being consolidated will allow it to free itself from the economic siege and continue to enrich uranium as well.”
Ya’alon voiced support for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s upcoming address to a special Congressional session scheduled for next week, saying: “We will not compromise the security of Israel’s citizens. We will do everything we can and voice on every stage what the dangers that are expected.”
Netanyahu joined Ya’alon in expressing concern about the “bad deal” with Iran, again warning the world of its dire consequences.
“To my regret, the information which has reached me in recent days greatly strengthens our concerns regarding the agreement being formulated between the major powers and Iran,” Netanyahu said while touring the IDF’s Southern Command headquarters on Tuesday.
This proposed agreement would allow Iran to become a nuclear threshold state, “that is, with the consent of the major powers,” the prime minister warned.
“Iran – which openly declares its intention to destroy the State of Israel – will receive a license to develop the production of bombs.”
“This is a bad agreement that endangers our future,” Netanyahu underscored, reiterating his obligation as prime minister to do “everything that I can to prevent this agreement. Therefore, I will go to Washington to address the American Congress because the American Congress is likely to be the final brake before the agreement between the major powers and Iran.”
Even if the Obama administration reaches a deal with Iran, the agreement still requires the ratification of Congress. Therefore Netanyahu is attributing such grave importance to his speech, which he intends to deliver despite the political and diplomatic strife it has generated and notwithstanding vigorous opposition by the White House.
