(Washington Examiner) - Sen. Ted Cruz has thrown his support behind Gov. Mike Pence.
As Indiana Republican Gov. Mike Pence continues to be under fire for a new bill signed last week, Cruz let him know he is not without support from his fellow Republican lawmakers.
Cruz, the first official 2016 Republican presidential candidate, released a statement Monday night backing Pence.
“I want to commend Governor Mike Pence for his support of religious freedom, especially in the face of fierce opposition. There was a time, not too long ago, when defending religious liberty enjoyed strong bipartisan support. Alas, today we are facing a concerted assault on the First Amendment, on the right of every American to seek out and worship God according to the dictates of his or her conscience,” the Texas Senator said.
“Governor Pence is holding the line to protect religious liberty in the Hoosier State. Indiana is giving voice to millions of courageous conservatives across this country who are deeply concerned about the ongoing attacks upon our personal liberties. I’m proud to stand with Mike, and I urge Americans to do the same,” he concluded in the statement.
In a Wall Street Journal op-ed published nearly simultaneously Monday night regarding his signing of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, Pence argued that the law is not a “license to discriminate.”
“As governor of Indiana, if I were presented a bill that legalized discrimination against any person or group, I would veto it. Indiana’s new law contains no reference to sexual orientation. It simply mirrors federal law that President Bill Clinton signed in 1993,” he wrote.
Supporters of Indiana’s new bill say it protects religious freedoms, while activists say it will allow businesses to discriminate against same-sex couples.
