Mitt Romney: Obama’s ‘Mistakes’ Allowed ISIS to Grow

AUGUST 31, 2014 5:39 PM
(Newsmax) – President Barack Obama’s mistakes enabled the rise of the Islamic State (ISIS) and created the immigration crisis at the country’s southern border, his 2012 opponent, Mitt Romney, said Sunday in a roundtable radio discussion hosted by John Catsimatidis.
“Mistakes were made and now we have ISIS,” Romney told Catsimatidis on “The Cats Round Table” on New York City station WNYM-AM.
Romney argued that ISIS would not be gaining power if the United States has followed his plan back in 2012 for dealing with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
“If you go back a few years when Syria fell into revolution and tumult, when rebels were pushing against Assad, I laid out what I thought was a prudent course for us to see stability in Syria,” he said. “Had we followed that course, there’s a good chance you would not see an ISIS today.”
He said his plan would have done more to back revolutionaries in Syria while ensuring Assad’s own tribe, the Alawites, that their future was secure even without him in power.
“These kind of actions would have stabilized Syria, at least I believe so, and would have prevented the growth of a group like ISIS,” Romney said.
He also accused Obama of failing to heed American intelligence about ISIS, saying that the president was told a year ago that the jihadists planned to invade an Iraqi city.
“We saw ISIS roll into Iraq and, instead of attacking them immediately and knocking them in their convoy when they would have been easy to knock down, relatively easy to knock down, the president again watched,” said Romney. “And now we’re in a position where ISIS has run throughout major portions of Iraq. There have been horrific human rights abuses, tragedies.”
In addition, Romney took Obama to task for his immigration policies.
“The president should have enforced our immigration laws from the very beginning,” the former Massachusetts governor said. “His announcement of a form of amnesty only encouraged people to continue to flood over the border. The right answer to the immigration crisis would be to secure the border and enact a series of immigration policy reforms instead.
The government “can stop illegal immigration and also make the legal process more transparent and have one that meets the needs of America,” said Romney.
Romney, who lost to Obama in 2012, insists he isn’t running for office again, despite Catsimatidis calling him “President Romney” in the show.
An Iowa poll last week suggested Romney would be the party’s odds-on favorite if he threw his hat in the ring for 2016.
Romney also addressed two domestic issues: the rioting in Ferguson, Missouri., and Burger King’s decision to purchase the Tim Horton’s restaurant chain so it can establish offices in Canada as part of a tax inversion plan.
While he refrained from taking sides in the Ferguson case, he said more information is needed before a judgment is reached about Officer Darren Wilson, who shot an unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown, sparking the protests.
But Romney did defend Burger King’s decision about moving its operations.
“If American companies are trying to get out of America, then something is wrong in America,” he said. “If companies don’t want to be here, then companies aren’t gonna form here, either. They’re gonna go elsewhere to start.”

Israeli filmmaker heads to the West Bank to document what Palestinians think of the Holocaust

 August 31, 2014, 8:33 pm 32
What do average Palestinians think about the Holocaust, if they know about it at all? Amateur Israeli filmmaker Corey Gil-Shuster, who moved to Israel from Canada 15 years ago, set out to the West Bank to find out as part of his YouTube series, “Ask an Israeli, ask a Palestinian.”

The results, unscientific though they were, weren’t especially encouraging.
There were three types of answers that surfaced during his interviews: lack of knowledge about the Holocaust, the view that the Holocaust happened but was exaggerated or is what the Israelis are doing to the Palestinians now, or the idea that Adolf Hitler was right for killing Jews.
The question “Palestinians: What do you know/think of the Holocaust?” was sent in by “Jason from Canada.” Gil-Shuster and his translator filmed on his $180 Best Buy camera mainly in Ramallah while this summer’s fighting in Gaza was still ongoing.
“Me and the translator walked down the street and he mainly picked people who looked like they were intelligent,” Gil-Shuster told The Times of Israel. “Sometimes I asked people. We mainly asked people who look like they have two minutes to answer a question.”
Ayoud in Ramallah, for example, said that “The same they did to the Jews, the Jews are doing now,” according Gil-Shuster’s translator.
“They are basically massacring the Palestinians, just like Hitler did to them,” agreed his companion Najla from the US, “except people had more sympathy for the Jews than they do for the Palestinians, ’cause in American media, they portray the Jews as the ones being hit by the Palestinians.”

Mohammad from Ramallah said that 100,000 Jews were killed, “but they keep announcing 6 million were killed… Anything that happens to the Jews they will exaggerate.”
Also in Ramallah, Malek said, “It’s exaggerated in the media; still I am against it and against the killing of civilians anywhere… Nobody denies the Holocaust, it happened, and it is real. But what Israel does now is use this as an excuse to play victim on the entire world… they kill us Palestinians, just like they were killing them.”
Speaking in Nablus, a man named Ahmed said, “All respect to Hitler.” He added that he wanted to kill Jews “because the Jews are occupying the land.”
A young woman in Ramallah named Amani opined that “Hitler left a few Jews to let the world know why he burned them.” Are Jews evil? she was asked. “Yes, of course.”
Several respondents didn’t know much about the Holocaust, beyond that it was where Hitler burned the Jews.
Abdel-Karim in Ramallah seemed to be the most well-informed. “They were killed, they were burned, they were expelled,” he said. “Hitler was a dictator who liked to take over everything… He wanted all people to be scared of him. Because of that he burned the Jews. To show the people of the world what powers the Germans had.”
The self-funded Ask project started somewhat by chance around three years ago, when Gil-Shuster got fed up with non-Israelis making claims about Israeli society that didn’t match what he had experienced living here. He started by asking on Facebook for a for questions to pose to Israelis. The project, which has garnered over 100,000 views for some of its videos, has received more than a thousand question submissions.
Gil-Shuster said that he has a set of rules for the approximately 250 videos he has made: “The majority of responses will be random people on the street that I meet. I include all responses no matter what they say. I don’t edit out any of the content of what they say; I only edit their names out or if someone interrupts or something. I try to get a representative sampling of Israelis — young, old, men, women, Arabs, Jews, etc. This doesn’t always work because older people, women and Arabs, for example, are less likely to agree to be in the project. So it is not scientific sampling but I try.”
He said he was aware that acknowledging the Holocaust was taboo in Palestinian culture, and that many either know little or think it is a lie made up by Jews.
Still, he said, he “was a little shocked at the depth of hate they have for Jews and Israelis. I wanted to yell at them when they answered these things but I don’t want to burn bridges so they will think I have an anti-Palestinian motive to ask questions.”
He said he did not feel he was in danger asking questions about the Holocaust. “I present myself as a Canadian. No one ever asks if I am Jewish and I don’t think they care about foreign Jews so much. But if they suspected I am Israeli, they will likely think I am a Shin Bet agent or some kind of spy looking for information.”
The project has given Gil-Shuster certain insights into Palestinian society, eh  “I noticed that in Ramallah where they are more worldly, wealthier, live a better quality of life, they have more hate than poorer, more uneducated Palestinians living in Jenin, for example.”
A 2010 video by Gil-Shuster showing Palestinians visiting the Yad Vashem Holocaust museum in Jerusalem gave a very different impression, as the young West Bank residents expressed horror at the event and a desire to learn lessons from it.
Jeff Moskowitz contributed to this report.

Obama’s Miserable Failure

Obama’s Miserable Failure

Daniel Greenfield, a Shillman Journalism Fellow at the Freedom Center, is a New York writer focusing on radical Islam. He is completing a book on the international challenges America faces in the 21st century.

President Obama Makes Statement On The SequestrationIt was always obvious what Obama’s supporters wanted. They weren’t willing to settle for a Hillary, just another politician who would punch the clock, deliver tepid speeches and push their leftist agenda.
They wanted someone larger than life. A head made for Mount Rushmore and a body that would be cast in statues across the country. Speeches meant to be studied in classrooms for the next hundred years.
They compared him to JFK and Reagan. He was treated as the icon that his backers wanted him to be. His election was supposed to be a watershed moment in American history.
Instead it ends in miserable failure.
At home, Obama is caught in a desperate tug of war with Republicans. He won the budget battle by sending park rangers to shut down national monuments. His last ditch gamble for holding on to the Senate is using racial tensions in Ferguson to promote black voter turnout.
And if he wins, all he’ll have is what he has now.
This is how shoddy and tawdry the reality of Hope and Change has become. Trapped in a corner, Obama is dragging out the dirtiest Chicago politics. He’s trying to hold off the inevitable by using the same types of tactics that the crooked mayor of his hometown would.
There’s no inspiration here. No words that will resound across time. Just dirty rats on a sinking ship.
Blame Congress has become the new Blame Bush. ObamaCare is a slow motion disaster that requires constant course corrections to keep it from coming apart. It’s not the new Social Security or Medicare. It’s the new HMO; a clumsy construction that most Americans are unhappy with.
Obama’s only power comes from his abuse of his authority, but what one man does, another man can undo. Instead of creating a lasting legislative legacy, Obama’s executive orders and legislation by administration are a house of cards that his successor can topple with the same pen and phone.
They seem intimidating in the way that the actions of tyrants are, but tyranny can be undone with tyranny. What Obama failed to do was build a consensus. He didn’t change the course of American history. He didn’t win the hearts and minds of Americans. Now he’s reduced to vandalizing America.
Obama said that Putin’s actions in Ukraine weren’t a sign of strength, but a sign of weakness. There is some truth to that. Putin’s economic policies have failed and he was unpopular at home. But the Obama tyrannical reign of phone and pen also isn’t a sign of strength. It’s a sign of weakness.
Like Putin, Obama has run out of options.
Unpopular with voters, shunned by his own party in battleground states, he rules by executive order and parties with influential executives while ignoring his responsibilities.
That’s not Reagan. It’s not JFK. It’s not even LBJ.
Stumbling to the microphone in a tan suit, he admits that he has no strategy for ISIS. Why should he? A few months ago he was calling a force that controls much of Iraq and Syria a junior varsity team while claiming credit for defeating Al Qaeda. Now his spokesman insists that the US is not at war with ISIS.
What Obama says has no relationship to reality. It’s always been that way. It’s only becoming obvious to those talking heads inside his media bubble now.
Obama’s foreign policy consisted of a flowchart of how things were supposed to work. There was an arrow from “Outreach” to “Reconciliation” to “New Middle East”. Instead Iraq is on fire. Libya is on fire. Syria is on fire. Everyone else is either mocking him or begging for his help without seriously expecting him to do anything useful.
And the flowchart doesn’t mention any of it.
ISIS was supposed to be a JV team. Iraqis are supposed to reconcile. ISIS isn’t supposed to be at war with the United States. Like most ideologues, Obama confuses what his reading of the inevitable forces of history says should happen with what is actually happening. Political Islam was supposed to stabilize the Middle East. Instead the future will be defined by a clash between national armies and Islamist militias.
Removing US troops from Iraq was supposed to fix the problem. The best anti-colonialist scholarship said it would. Instead combined with the Arab Spring, it let Al Qaeda take over much of the country.
But what else was an ideological fanatic big on theory and short on life experience going to do?
Obama is Fareed Zakaria. He’s Thomas Friedman. He’s Paul Krugman. He read all the books and he talks a good game so that it’s easy to miss the fact that his ideas don’t have much to do with real life.
Friedman babbling about the flattening world, Krugman pretending that money is infinite and Zakaria jumping from one ridiculous globalist idea to another sound good in a lecture hall or a column.
But only an idiot would actually listen to them.
Obama’s speeches sounded good, but only idiots would elect a man with no life experience, no executive experience and no meaningful experience of any kind for speaking well, instead of doing well.
Of course Obama doesn’t have a strategy for ISIS. Why would he?
ISIS wasn’t supposed to happen. His schedule, in between golfing and fundraising, had amnesty and Global Warming unilateral orders penciled in. Putin’s invasion of Ukraine also wasn’t on the schedule. Killing missile defense and being incredibly flexible were supposed to fix that.
As a last resort, sanctions, the universal failure of global diplomacy, were supposed to keep this from happening. But like everything else that Obama tried, they didn’t work.
Obama doesn’t live in the world of “What is” but the world of “What should be”. Inspiration does come from the world of “What should be”, but when it isn’t grounded in the world of “What is” then it manifests as insanity or leads to miserable failures.
The difference between the brilliant architect and the lunatic on the street corner is that while both of them know “What should be”, only one of them knows “What is”.
Obama’s inspiration came from “What should be”. He never did understand “What is”. His followers thought and think that “What is” can be waved away, ignored or beaten down as a last resort. That is what he is doing now with his executive orders and his unilateral rule. He is trying to salvage his miserable failure as a leader by forcing his way on the whole country.
It hasn’t made him popular. It hasn’t made his way into the American Way. It has isolated him. The American people have rejected him in poll after poll. Now the media is slowly accepting their verdict.
And no, he doesn’t have a strategy for that.

London (AFP) - A middle-aged British mother-of-two and former rock band member has joined jihadists in Syria and wants to behead Christians with a "blunt knife", British media reported.
The reports identified the woman as Sally Jones, 45, from Kent in southeast England, and said she now goes by the name Sakinah Hussain, or Umm Hussain al-Britani.
Security experts estimate that hundreds of Britons have gone to the Middle East to join the Islamic State (IS) militant group, the most brutal to emerge out of Syria's bloody civil war and the most successful.
The well-funded group controls large swathes of Syria and Iraq and has proved adept at using social media to boost its profile, attract recruits and terrify enemies with images of mass executions and battlefield victories.
Last week another female British jihadist reportedly in Syria, known as Khadijah Dare, purportedly tweeted that she wanted to be the first woman to kill a British or US "terrorist".
The Daily Mail and the Sunday Times alleged that Jones, a convert to Islam, travelled to Syria after an online romance with convicted 20-year-old computer hacker Junaid Hussain, and is now based in the IS stronghold of Raqa.
The Sunday Times said she had tweeted last week saying: "You Christians all need beheading with a nice blunt knife and stuck on the railing at raqqa... Come here I'll do it for you!"
Jones' Twitter account was still active on Monday, but could not be independently verified and the post quoted by the newspaper was not on her timeline.
The alleged threat is likely to be taken seriously by British security agencies after an IS video posted online last month showed a man with a British accent beheading US freelance journalist James Foley.
The brazen execution heaped pressure on Prime Minister David Cameron to toughen anti-jihadist security measures, and Britain has since raised its terror alert level to "severe", citing the threat from returning jihadists.
Jones' twitter account banner page features a photo of man who appears to be Junaid Hussain, and another tweet says she and her "husband" -- presumably Junaid -- had been stuck in Syria's northwestern city of Idlib for seven months before joining the "khilafa".
The "khilafa" is the Arabic word for caliphate, a sovereign, religiously led state IS have declared in lands they control.
Cameron is expected to outline tougher measures against jihadist suspects later on Monday.
