Poll: Israeli Perception of Obama Plummets

OCTOBER 31, 2014 6:21 PM
(Breitbart) – By better than a three to one margin, Israelis now consider U.S. President Barack Obama more pro-Palestinian than pro-Israel.
According to a Smith Research/Jerusalem Post poll taken Wednesday night, only 16 percent of Israelis believe President Obama’s administration is more pro-Israel than pro-Palestinian. The new poll found that 53% consider the administration more pro-Palestinian, 20% call it neutral, and 11% did not express an opinion. The margin of error of the poll was 4.5 percentage points.
The poll surveyed 500 respondents representing a statistical sample of the adult Israeli Jewish population. It was the first poll taken following the report by Jeffrey Goldberg inThe Atlantic in which officials close to Obama were quoted sharply criticizing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and calling him “chickens**t.”
Goldberg also revealed that White House personnel had previously called Netanyahu “recalcitrant, myopic, reactionary, obtuse, blustering, pompous, and ‘Aspergery.’” Goldberg stated that President Obama himself had alluded to Netanyahu’s lack of political courage.
The report resulted in a major backlash among Israelis and criticism of Obama across the political spectrum.
Keeping a running score of the degree to which Israelis feel that the U.S. President is “on their side,” Smith Research has asked Israelis in 11 Jerusalem Post polls throughout Obama’s tenure whether his administration is more pro-Israel, more pro-Palestinian, or neutral.
The current results contrast sharply with results from some previous polls. The Smith Research poll that asked the question following Obama’s March 2013 visit to Israel found that 27% considered his administration more pro-Israel, only 16% said more pro-Palestinian, 39% neutral, and 18% did not express an opinion. Since then, Obama’s administration has gone from an 11% majority of Israelis believing it to be more pro-Israel to a majority of 37% deeming it more pro-Palestinian.
The high-water mark for the Obama administration among Israelis came shortly after Obama was elected, in May 2009, when 31% called the administration pro-Israel. The low point came just months later, in August 2009, following Obama’s Cairo speech and assorted diplomatic mishaps. At that point, only 4% of Israelis considered President Obama to be pro-Israel.
Interestingly, the poll showed a correlation between those Israelis who consider themselves religiously observant and those who consider Obama to be more pro-Palestinian; 69% of religious respondents consider Obama pro-Palestinian. Only 8% of religious respondents say the administration is more pro-Israel, compared to 20% of secular respondents.

Kano (Nigeria) (AFP) - Families of the 219 schoolgirls held for more than six months by Boko Haram militants on Saturday said they were shocked but not surprised at fresh claims that the teenagers had been married off.
Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau made the claim in a new video obtained by AFP on Friday, in which he also said that all the girls had converted to Islam and rejected claims of a ceasefire and peace talks.
The head of the Chibok Elders Forum in the northeast Nigerian town, Pogo Bitrus, told AFP: "It (the claim about marriage) is shocking to us, although we know that Boko Haram is not a reliable group.
"We were sceptical about the talks to release our girls and we never took the ceasefire seriously because since the announcement, they have never stopped attacking communities.
"Therefore the information that our girls have been married off is not surprising to us," said Bitrus, whose four nieces are among the hostages.
"We are only hoping the government will step up whatever efforts it is making to quell the insurgency."
Nigeria's military and presidency said on October 17 that they had reached a deal to end five years of deadly violence in the country's northeast, as well as agreement to release the Chibok girls.
But violence has continued unabated, including a triple bomb attack on a bus station in the northern city of Gombe on Friday, which killed at least eight and injured dozens more.
Shekau indicated in earlier video messages that the girls would be sold as slave brides and that some, but not all, had converted to Islam.
His latest claim that they were now all Muslims and had been "married off" chimes with testimony from former hostages that forced conversion and marriage are commonplace in Boko Haram camps.
Human Rights Watch said in a report published this week that upwards of 500 women and girls have been kidnapped since 2009, although some estimates put the figure at more than 1,000.
Enoch Mark, a Christian pastor in Chibok whose daughter and niece are among the hostages, said the girls' families were "lost for words".
"Since they were kidnapped we have no certainty about the situation they are in. We keep getting conflicting information," he added.
They were "ironically lucky" that world attention has focused on the Chibok girls, he added, but said their situation was part of a wider issue.
"Only God knows the number of girls kidnapped by Boko Haram," he said. "We only keep hoping that they will be returned to us and if they are not we take solace in God."

BAGHDAD (AP) — Islamic State group extremists lined up and shot dead at least 50 tribesmen and women in Iraq's Anbar province, officials said Saturday, the latest mass killing committed by the group.
The shooting happened late Friday in the village of Ras al-Maa, north of the provincial capital of Ramadi, Anbar councilman Faleh al-Issawi said.
Militants accused men and women of the Al Bu Nimr tribe of retaliating against them after being displaced from their homes when the group seized the Anbar town of Hit last month, al-Issawi said.
"These killings are taking place almost on a daily basis now in the areas under the control of the Islamic State group and they will continue unless this terrorist group is stopped," al-Issawi told The Associated Press.
An official in the Anbar governor's office confirmed the death toll. He spoke on condition of anonymity as he is not authorized to brief journalists.
On Thursday, authorities found the bodies of 48 Sunni tribesmen killed by the Islamic State group in Anbar.
The Islamic State group has overrun a large part of Anbar province in its push to expand its territory, which currently stands at about one-third of both Iraq and Syria. Officials with the Iraqi government, as well as officials with the U.S.-led coalition targeting the extremists, repeatedly have said that Iraqi tribes are key in the fight against the Islamic State group since they are able to penetrate areas inaccessible to airstrikes and ground forces.
Meanwhile Saturday, the United Nations mission in Baghdad said that at least 1,273 Iraqis were killed in violence in October, a slight increase compared to last month amid the Islamic State group's assault.
The U.N. report said violence killed 856 civilians and 417 members of Iraq's security forces, while attacks wounded 2,010 Iraqis.
The worst-hit city was Baghdad, with 379 civilians killed, the report said.
The U.N. figures do not take into account causalities in Anbar province or some other militant-held parts of Iraq.
The U.N. has said September's death toll was 1,119 Iraqis killed.

Gaza Fires Rocket Which Strikes Southern Israel [Breaking]

breaking-news-2-b

Breaking news has just come in from the Israel as a rocket from Gaza was fired at southern Israel. According to articles by both Channel NewsAsia and France 24, the rocket hit the Eshkol area in Southern Israel on Friday, October 31. This is the first rocket to strike the country since September 16, in which both Israel and Palestine agreed to a cease-fire.
It should be noted that the reports do not mention of any casualties or damage. A spokesman for the Israel Defense Force (IDF) provided a statement on the news.
“A rocket fired from the Gaza Strip hit the Eshkol area in southern Israel.”
It is also reported that the spokesman did not mention how the Israelis, the IDF, or Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would respond, despite the rocket being fired during a ceasefire put in place since Operation Protective Edge which was launched in the summer by Israel against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The ceasefire was agreed upon on August 26 and was initiated by Egypt. It ended a war that lasted 50 days, resulting in the deaths of 2,140 Palestinians and 73 Israelis, most of them in the IDF. Both sides are expected to resume talks very soon in Cairo as part of an effort to keep the ceasefire in place.
It should be noted that earlier this week, the Inquisitr reported of another time when the Gaza Strip fired a rocket at Israel during the ceasefire. However, the IDF claimed a “false alarm” in an alleged cover-up. As for the recent attack, if Hamas has resumed their assault on Israel, another war might follow.
This story is currently developing. Please check back with the Inquisitr with updates pertaining to this breaking news as it becomes available.
