On Sunday, supporters of ISIS called on jihadis to murder Twitter employees for blocking and closing their social media accounts, Buzzfeed reported. The threats also included founder Jack Dorsey, CBS San Fransisco said.
“Your virtual war on us will cause a real war on you,” said a post directed at Dorsey. The post, written in Arabic and posted at justpaste.it, also includes a picture of Dorsey with a cross-hair over his face.
“You started this failed war,” the post added. “We told you from the beginning it’s not your war, but you didn’t get it and kept closing our accounts on Twitter, but we always come back.”
“For the ‘individual jihadi’ all over the world, target the Twitter company and its interests in any place, people, and buildings, and don’t allow any one of the atheists to survive," the post says. The message, Buzzfeed said, was also posted on Twitter.
A spokesman for Twitter said that “our security team is investigating the veracity of these threats with relevant law enforcement officials.” It's not the first time ISIS has threatened to murder Twitter employees.
As we reported last September, ISIS targeted employees of the San Francisco-based company, threatening to murder them for closing down accounts believed to be associated with the terrorist group. Mashable reported at the time that Twitter wasn't "freaking out" over the threats, but a company spokesperson said its security team is "investigating the veracity of these threats with relevant law enforcement officials." Twitter's rules forbid threatening messages, but ISIS and other Islamist groups have become quite adept at using social media to spread their message.
The threats come at about the same time as a report that ISIS militants allegedly tricked a distraught mother into eating her own murdered son. ISIS members have also reportedly buried women and children alive, beheaded a Christian children for refusing to convert to Islam, and committed a number of other gruesome atrocities.
Recently, President Obama said that military force alone isn't sufficient for dealing with terrorists and suggested a sort of international jobs program. State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf also floated the idea of a program to deal with what she called "the root causes that leads people to join these groups," including a "lack of opportunity for jobs..."
