On Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke to a joint session of Congress on the issue of a nuclear-powered Iran. Although Netanyahu opened his speech by giving kudos to President Obama, liberals at all levels responded with hate and derision. Some even called for his death.
Barack Obama, for example, called the speech "theater" and suggested members of Congress also dismiss Netanyahu's warnings. Democratic lawmakers called the Israeli leader a "child" and suggested he "go home," with some comparing him to Dick Cheney. Others even said they resented Netanyahu presenting his view to Congress.
Predictably, left-wing pundits attacked the speech, with MSNBC's Chris Matthews accusing Netanyahu of attempting a coup against Obama in Congress. "They went into the U.S. Congress to take over U.S. foreign policy today from the President," he said. "It's a remarkable day when the leaders of the opposition in Congress allowed this to happen."
He also appeared to accuse Republicans of being part of some grand conspiracy to hurt Obama. "This was a take-over attempt by Netanyahu with his complying American partners to take American foreign policy out of the hands of the president," he added.
CNN's Gloria Borger attacked Netanyahu for daring to mention the Holocaust, accusing the Israeli leader of being political. "When he sort of raised the specter of the Holocaust and 'Never Again' and Elie Wiesel," she said, "that was just great. Ari Fleischer could have done this great political speech." Fleischer, however, schooled Borger for her comment.
"That’s not political, that’s called survival," he said. "That’s called learning the lesson," he started before being interrupted.
Twitchy said the left-wing hate-fest wasn't confined to elected liberals and pundits. Twitter exploded with hate for the Israeli leader, mostly with tweets too profane to quote here.
"U have the audacity to come into my country, join the hateful GOP & insult my president, and you want us to join u to stop Iran?" one person tweeted. "He just said how many countries will Iran gobble up, but how did Israel come about?" added another Twitter user going by the name "jihad," apparently ignorant that Israel's borders were first established by the United Nations in the 1940s.
Not to be outdone, some called for Netanyahu to be murdered. "Somebody please shoot Netanyahu," one person tweeted. A search of Twitter found other death wishes, but most were far too profane to quote here.
In February 2011 we first said that liberalism, at its core, is an ideology of rage and hate. On Tuesday, liberals of all stripes proved that assertion correct.
