|
| PROMINENT CUBANS Francisco de Arango y Parreño (1765-1837) A Creole planter and economist who co-founded, with Captain General Luis de Las Casas, the influential Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País, the Consulado de Agricultura y Comercio de La Habana (to further the sugar growers’ interests), and the Papel periódico, Cuba’s first nenwspaper. The Haitian revolution, which destroyed that country’s sugar industry, broke out when Arango was in Madrid. Realizing the opportunity this offered for Cuba, he successfully lobbied the Spanish government to do away with many trade barriers, end all restrictions on the African slave trade and permit the unlimited importation of slaves. |
