Richard Dawkins, renowned atheist and author of The God Delusion, sparked a lot of controversy by tweeting, “It would be immoral” to not abort an unborn child who has been diagnosed with Down Syndrome.

Dawkins didn’t back down, composing a host of tweets in response to the backlash. This one stands out:

Sarah Palin, former Alaska Gov. and Vice Presidential candidate, is herself the mother of a child with Down Syndrome. Her response is the most memorable of all. She chose to address Dawkins in a recent Facebook post, which included numerous pictures of children with DS, including her son, Trig.
Mr. Dawkins,
I’d let you meet my son if you promised to open your mind, your eyes, and your heart to a unique kind of absolute beauty.
But, in my request for you to be tolerant, I’d have to warn Trig he must be tolerant, too, because he may superficially look at you as kind of awkward. I’ll make sure he’s polite, though!
Love,
Sarah Palin & family

In another tweet, Dawkins said that “a majority of Down Syndrome fetuses in Europe and USA are aborted. What I recommended is not outlandish but the norm.”
As IJReview notes:
“Dawkins is accurate about the statistics: Due to pre-natal screening the majority of children with Down Syndrome are, in fact, not allowed to be born. But the suggestion that to not abort a baby with Down’s would be immoral appears to be what set so many passions aflame.”
The host of citizens, however, who clearly disagree with this outlook is encouraging. The miracle of Down Syndrome babies is their innocent and beautiful nature. It’s impossible to comprehend the thought process of people like Richard Dawkins.
