‘Muslims are Hilarious!’ MSNBC Panel’s Unimaginable Response to Oklahoma Beheading
(BizPacReview) – In response to the beheading of an Oklahoma woman by a recent convert to Islam, an MSNBC panel wants to do away with a narrative linking followers of the religion to violence by establishing a new stereotype that “Muslims are hilarious.”
The panelists joined MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry on Saturday to discuss an effort to use comedy to counter “anti-Muslim” ads soon to be running on the sides of New York City buses, when the horrific attack in Oklahoma came up.
“I would be remiss not to bring up the story out of Oklahoma,” Harris-Perry said. “It is a story I read as a ‘work-place violence’ story.”

Harris-Perry played a clip of Moore, Okla., police official telling the media that coworkers said the man behind the attack, Alton Nolen, tried to convert some of them to the Muslim religion.
“And then, that’s it,” she said at the conclusion of the video clip. “And now this is somehow about Islam.”
“You know it’s funny,” said Dean Obeidallah, a writer for The Daily Beast. “Just so it’s clear for everyone, there is nothing in the Koran that says if you get fired go back to your workplace and kill people.”
That he said this with a chuckle seemed to get lost in the imagery.
Obeidallah said the “right-wing media” in America is using the attack to suggest that “Muslims are here in America, they’re committing jihad.”
Harris-Perry put forth a convincing argument that Nolen’s conversion had little to do with him beheading his victim.
“There should be a cultural paradigm shift in which its not okay to create that linkage immediately,” writer and filmmaker Negin Farsad said. “We have gone on and on and on creating this language between Muslims and violence and we need to have a counter-narrative and we don’t. And that’s what we trying to do.
“Muslims are funny,” Harris-Perry chimed in.
“That’s the new stereotype, pass it around; Muslims are hilarious,” Farsad quipped.
