CUBA: SOME ACTS OF POLITICAL REPRESSION IN MARCH 2018
(SD: Arrests) (AR: Acts of Repudiation) (AV: Vandalism) (AF: Assault) (H: Harassment)
- Throughout the month of March 2018, our Commission was able to verify at least 319 arbitrary detentions, almost all of short duration, of peaceful Cuban dissidents, a figure slightly lower than that registered in the previous month of February (347). The names of each one of the victims appear next to the graphic that follows this cover and that refers to the arrests for political reasons that we could learn in the last eight years.
- We also recorded 33 cases of harassment and outrage and 9 physical aggressions executed or instigated by the powerful secret political police or their agents. To be highlighted is what happened on March 25, 2018 to former prisoner of conscience and union activist IVAN HERNANDEZ CARRILLO, who was brutally attacked and, in addition, fined on that date by agents of the aforementioned repressive body, occasion in which his mother and Dama de Blanco ASUNCION CARRILLO was also arrested, mistreated and severely fined.
- Systematic weekly arrests continued to be made to various members of the Damas de Blanco movement in several provinces of the country, such detentions being carried out under inhuman and degrading conditions, as well as the arbitrary ban on travel abroad to opponents who tried to respond to invitations from various international NGOs.
- The number of political prisoners remains above a hundred, which we can ascertain in the coming days when we publish our next Partial List of Prisoners for Political Reasons in Cuba.
- The new political prisoners interned during the past month of March were: Aracelis Fernández, Martha Sánchez, Freddy Martín Fraga and Edel Peralta Rus.
Documented cases of temporarily detained or prosecuted persons, for political reasons, since January 2010
