CUBAN INSTITUTIONS AND GROUPS

ASOCIACIÓN DE LOS VETERANOS Y PATRIOTAS

An opposition movement against President Alfredo Zayas consisting of veterans of the wars of Cuba’s independence struggle.  Beginning as a protest for veterans’ pensions, they held an assembly in 1923.  Worried about the large size of the assembly, Zayas ordered the pensions to be paid.  However, another assembly, held the same year, captured the public’s sympathy with a list of demands and suggestions to solve the nation’s problems, including political reforms.  The veterans then threatened to start a revolution and did indeed stage a minor uprising in Cienfuegos on April 30, 1924.  The poorly organized movement was easily defeated, and the possibility of another United States intervention avoided.
