A U.S.-led coalition on Monday carried out 18 airstrikes against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), according to Defense Department officials.
In Syria, aircraft conducted 10 airstrikes near the border town of Kobani. The attack destroyed 11 ISIS “fighting positions,” a pair of buildings, a storage container and a “tactical unit,” U.S. Central Command said in a statement.
The town, situated miles from Turkey, has been under siege for months as local Kurdish forces fight to fend off the terrorist organization.
Two other airstrikes struck “several” buildings affiliated with the terror group near Dayr Az Zawr and Ar Raqqah, both in Syria.
Coalition forces executed six additional strikes in Iraq, including areas near Al Asad, Sinjar and Mosul, the country’s second largest city, where they hit a “large” ISIS unit, according to Central Command.
The price tag for U.S. operations against ISIS since August recently eclipsed $1 billion.
Beside the U.S., partner nations that have conducted airstrikes in Iraq include Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, Central Command said.
Meanwhile, Bahrain, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates have joined the U.S. in targeting ISIS forces in Syria.
