CUBA: SOME ACTS OF POLITICAL REPRESSION IN JUNE 2018

During last June, we verified from reliable sources that in Cuba there were at least 122 arbitrary temporary arrests, for political reasons, of peaceful dissidents who, for the most part, were interned under degrading conditions in barracks of the police services.
It is a fact that, for two years now, the number of arbitrary arrests of dissidents has been steadily declining, beyond some circumstantial event including natural disasters. This can clearly be seen in each table of arrests featured on the cover of our monthly reports. They indicate that, since May 2016, such detentions have been decreasing in a very visible way.
• In the month being reported, the powerful secret political police carried out or instigated 31 acts of police harassment, two physical assaults and three acts of vandalism against peaceful dissidents and their innocent relatives.
The number of political prisoners remains stationary in the environment of 120. Outstanding among them are the situation of prisoners of conscience DR. EDUARDO CARDET CONCEPCION, leader of the opposition Christian Liberation Movement, and DR. ARIEL RUIZ URQUIOLA, an environmental biologist. Both continue to be the object of hateful repressive actions within the prisons in which they find themselves. Dr. Ruiz Urquiola has been on hunger strike for several weeks
