Free Cuba Now!

Today, people across the world are giving to help make a difference in the world. #GivingTuesday began in 2012 as a simple idea, to dedicate one day of the year to live more generously. It sparked a global movement that unites people by the millions with the principle of radical generosity, "the idea that the suffering of others should be as intolerable to us as our own suffering."

The Center for a Free Cuba (CFC) was founded in 1997 to reject the normalization of the suffering of Cubans in the island by a decades old dictatorship by supporting the inalienable right of Cubans to their own rights, urging persons of goodwill to amplify the voices of the Cuban people, and mobilize democratic governments around the world to institute policies that encourage genuine reforms in Cuba.

Thanks to the support of people like you it was possible for CFC in 2021 to send medicines to church groups to provide medicines to families of jailed dissidents; provide needed smartphones, and laptops; and provide internet access to keep information flowing in and out of the island.

CFC was also able to denounce the crackdown on Cubans peacefully assembling for their rights; demand a humanitarian channel be opened to get assistance directly to the Cuban people without regime interference; highlight cases of jailed journalists and human rights defendersexpose the internal blockade imposed by the Cuban dictatorship that places obstacles on Cubans from fishing for their supperbringing their food to market, or investing in their own country.

We hope that on this #GivingTuesday you will support the continuing mission and goal of CFC to promote a nonviolent transition to a Cuba that respects human rights and political and economic freedoms.

Rand Paul: Militants Pushing Critical Race Theory, Gender Ideology Want to ‘Hold Your Kid Down and Give Them a Shot Without Your Permission’

Senator Paul

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., questions Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra about vaccines Sept. 30 during a Senate hearing. Paul told The Daily Signal in an interview that Americans must “fight back” against vaccine mandates for children. (Photo: Greg Nash- Pool/Getty Images).

Health officials have not “completely explored” the safety of COVID-19 vaccines for children, Sen. Rand Paul warned, calling for more examination and information on the safety risks that vaccines potentially pose for children.

“These are the same people that want to teach critical race theory,” the Kentucky Republican said in an interview Thursday with The Daily Signal. “They’re the same people that want to teach your kindergartner that if they’re a boy, they can easily become a girl. ”

“This is the craziness being foisted upon our children in school, but it’s also the same crazy people that want to hold your kid down and give them a shot without your permission, and we need to fight back,” he said.

The Food and Drug Administration’s Oct. 29 emergency use authorization of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for children has sparked concerns that officials will use the authorization to mandate vaccinations for children.

The concerns are not unfounded: On Oct. 1, California became the first state in the nation to announce a COVID-19 vaccination mandate for children attending in-person schooling.

And in early November, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, introduced a bill aimed at prohibiting all entities that receive federal funding, including school districts, from requiring COVID-19 vaccinations for children. Stop the Vaccine Mandate in your State!

“I don’t think that we have completely explored the safety for children,” Paul told The Daily Signal. “No. 1, we don’t know—whether or not your child has already had COVID—whether the vaccine is safe.”

“You say, ‘How could that be? The CDC voted on it. Didn’t they do a study? Didn’t they look at several thousand children?’” Paul asked, mentioning the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “Well, they did look at several thousand children, which is a fairly small sample, but they excluded children who had already had COVID.”

The senator said health officials have acknowledged “tacitly” that children who already have had COVID-19 are “no good for determining whether the vaccine works, because they’ve already had the disease.”

“They understand natural immunity. They just feign as if they don’t,” Paul said, adding:

But by excluding kids that have already had it, we don’t know if the myocarditis or some of these side effects are more common in people who have already had the disease. The reason it might be more common is because if you’ve already had COVID and you get vaccinated, you get a thousand times greater immune response.

The immune response of a 10-year-old or 15-year-old potentially could be “so exuberant” that it could lead to inflammatory conditions, such as inflammation of the heart, Paul said.

“God forbid, your healthy kid who is not really at risk much for COVID, gets a deadly or debilitating disease from a vaccine,” the senator said, adding: “I would think you’d want to make an informed decision. But instead, Dr. Fauci says, ‘Stick your head in the sand. Don’t ask me any questions. Just do what you’re told.’ And basically, that’s the noise of a dictator.”

Paul’s reference was to Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the chief medical adviser to President Joe Biden, with whom Paul has sparred publicly several times.
Paul predicted that public schools will “forbid entry” for students who are not vaccinated.

“That’s coming,” he said.

“Fortunately, I survived all this,” the Kentucky Republican said of his three children. “Mine are now grown. Grandkids will be the next thing I’ll have to worry about, but that’s what’s coming. The public schools aren’t going to relent.”

The Biden administration’s vaccine mandate for private employers has been stayed in court and very well may be struck down, Paul said, noting that he is “very hopeful” that the courts will find that mandate unconstitutional.
“But the mandates for kids in schools, we’ve had that for decades now,” he said, “and the courts have never really helped us with it. The problem is, they’re now mandating a lot of vaccines to things that are not really deadly, and particularly [not really] deadly at all for children, and with rare consequences.”
The senator also addressed Fauci’s suggestion on “CBS This Morning” that Republicans—and former President Donald Trump—have a “misplaced perception about people’s individual right to make a decision that supersedes the societal safety.”

Fauci’s comments reflect a “casual disregard for what this country was founded upon,” Paul told The Daily Signal, “that our rights come from our creator, that they’re guaranteed and enshrined in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.”

“He just wants you to listen to his authority,” Paul said of Fauci. “He has the authority. He wants people to listen and not question him, but that’s sort of a recipe for authoritarianism, so I greatly object to him.”

Let’s help Senator Rand Paul fight for our kids, fight for medical freedom in your state, and fight for Federal Freedom from Mandates!

November Fundraising Target Push!
Make a Contribution NOW! ➞

Friend,

At midnight, our campaign has an important fundraising deadline. Let me explain why it is so important we hit our fundraising goal:

  1. I am running for Governor of Texas against a well-funded incumbent opponent. To overcome these advantages, my campaign is counting on the grassroots conservatives, like yourself, to make up the difference and build the momentum we need to win.
  2. The Biden administration has opened our borders – allowing tens of thousands of illegals to pour into Texas. We must TAKE BACK control of our border.
Friend, as you can see, everything is on the line this election and I need your support. I believe that the future of America will be won or lost right here in Texas, and every patriot needs to get involved in this fight.

Will you contribute just $5 or $10 or maybe $25 before midnight so we can beat this important fundraising deadline and WIN THIS RACE?

Friend, the Biden administration is abusing its power to impose their radical and harmful agenda onto Texas, and Our Governor is allowing it to unfold on his watch.

I will ALWAYS fight for Texas, but in order to win this race I am counting on hearing from you today.

Please contribute $5, $10, $25 or more now and help me continue to defend the sovereignty of Texas!

Steadfast and Loyal,

Allen B. West

Free Cuba Now!

To promote a peaceful transition to a Cuba that respects human rights
and political and economic freedoms

On Int'l Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) Day recognizing some Cuban women that risked all for human rights in Cuba. One year after 27N

November 29th is the International Women Human Rights
Defenders (WHRDs) Day
, and November 27th marked one year since several hundred Cubans called for freedom of expression and dialogue, following the raid on the San Isidro Movement's headquarters in Havana a day earlier. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken issued a statement on this one year anniversary.

It has been one year since nearly 300 artists and activists gathered and demonstrated for freedom of expression at the gates of the Ministry of Culture in Havana.  Inspired by the peaceful and unprecedented protests of the San Isidro Movement, the artists called for artistic and personal freedoms in Cuba, and for the Cuban government to take part in a dialogue that would allow the Cuban people to have a voice in determining their own future. The United States stood by the Cuban people in that historic moment and continues to do so today. While officials initially agreed to listen to what the artists had to say, the regime later refused to take part in any dialogue.  The Cuban government’s actions since that day reaffirmed their determination to silence the artists, activists, and independent journalists who continue to bravely advocate for human rights and fundamental freedoms in Cuba.  The regime passed laws restricting free speech online, using them to fine and suspend the telecommunications services of activists and journalists who publish critical facts and opinions.

Secretary Blinken in his statement highlighted detained artists Luis Manuel Otero Alcantara, Maykel Osorbo, and detained activist Jose Daniel Ferrer while recognizing the bullying of "playwright Yunior Garcia, who took part in last year’s negotiations."

Cuban women have played an important role in the resistance to the dictatorship in Cuba, and are also paying a high price.

Dr. Oscar Elias Biscet, a former prisoner of conscience, nonviolence practitioner, and human rights defender, published an OpEd in The Washington Times  that is a must read. In it he also described the price that Cuban women are paying for standing up for freedom and their loved ones.

I met a woman who, after learning that her son had been jailed for participating in the protests, walked to the police station to demand his release. She was immediately interrogated and strip-searched, exposing a shirt with the pro-freedom slogan “no more hunger.” The police tore off her shirt, handcuffed and beat her, then forced her to walk almost naked in front of the other officers. “They beat me mercilessly,” she told me. “So many blows that I wet myself.”

During the 11J protests it is known that at least 195 Cuban women were arbitrarily detained, of which at least 67 remain jailed in Cuba today, according to Cubalex. Women have led during these and prior protests and paid a terrible price for their dissent.

Lady in White Sissi Abascal Zamora was sentenced to six years in prison for participating in the 11J protests in the town of Carlos Rojas, in the municipality of Jovellanos, in the province of Matanzas. The 23-year-old activist and member of the Party for Democracy Pedro Luis Boitel has ten business days to appeal. Reports are that a bus full of women dressed as civilians arrived where Sissi was peacefully demonstrating with others on July 11, 2021, and proceeded to beat her and others up, and a bottle was broken over Ms. Abascal Zamora's head requiring that she receive stitches.

Women have paid a high price for defending human rights in Cuba over several decades. Here is a sampling of some cases over the past 30 years.

Sirley Ávila León was a delegate to the Municipal Assembly of People’s Power in Cuba from June 2005, for the rural area of Limones until 2012 when the regime gerrymandered her district out of existence. The Castro regime removed her from her position because she had fought to reopen a school in her district, but was ignored by official channels and had reached out to international media. Her son, Yoerlis Peña Ávila, who had an 18 year distinguished career in the Cuban military was forced out when he refused to declare his mother insane and have her committed to a psychiatric facility.

Injuries suffered by Sirley Avila Leon in a May 24, 2015 machete attack.

Sirley joined the ranks of the democratic opposition, and repression against her increased dramatically. On May 24, 2015 she was the victim of a brutal machete attack carried out by Osmany Carriòn, with the complicit assistance of his wife, that led to the loss of her left hand, right upper arm nearly severed, and knees slashed into leaving her crippled. Following the attack she did not receive adequate medical care and was told quietly by medical doctors in Cuba that if she wanted to get better that she would need to leave the country.

On March 8, 2016 she arrived in Miami and began a course of treatments over the next six months during which she was able to walk once again although still limited due to her injuries. She returned to Cuba on September 7, 2016 only to find her home occupied by strangers and her attacker free and bragging that he would finish the job. She moved in with her mother and within a short time a camera and microphone were set up across from her mother's home on a post. The Victims of Communism interviewed her and produced the video below.

On September 20, 2013 human rights defender Yris Tamara Pérez Aguilera briefly described the abuse she had been subjected to by agents of Cuban state security earlier that same year to the 24th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva:

I have been the victim of several acts of aggression on the part of the Cuban authorities, especially by the agents Yuniel Monteagudo Reina and Eric Aquino Yera. They have beaten me into unconsciousness on the pavement, as took place most recently this past March 7 in Santa Clara. The hits to the head, neck, and back have caused me serious health problems that I have not been able to recover from. In addition to beating me, they have threatened me with death on various occasions, these agents have told me that they are going to rape me, and have shown their genitals during arbitrary arrests.

Cuban attorneys Yaremis Flores and Laritza Diversent in their 2013 report to the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) touched on the institutional nature of the violence upon women in Cuba by the Castro regime:

"The brutality of the police and state security agents, including women members of these bodies, against women dissidents, is supported by the state, which exemplifies the institutionalized violence as a means to repress women opposition activists. Arbitrary detention is one of the methods to prevent them from exercising their rights to speak, associate and demonstrate. In detention centers agents use violence, sexual assault and insults as means of repression. The cells enclosed in unsanitary and sometimes sanitary services have no privacy or are not appropriate for women, even having them share prison cells with men. In some cases, they forced to strip naked or forcibly stripped, obliging them to squat to see if they have items in their genitals and claims that have been reported that they have introduced a pen into the vagina, under the justification of seeking recording objects."

Due to increasing repression, human rights lawyer, Laritza Diversent was granted political asylum and went into exile on  May 4, 2017. She continues to receive threats to the present day from the Cuban government.

HELP LT. COL. ALLEN WEST STOP PHONY POLITCIANS LIKE ROBERT FRANCIS O'ROURKE! ➞

Friend,

As I am sure you have heard by now, a well-known radical Democrat recently joined the race for Governor of Texas.

Robert Francis O'Rourke is a phony, socialist Democrat who has pledged to COME FROM YOUR GUNS if elected. He also REFUSES to go by his real name in order to pander to liberal voters.

These type of extremist, phony politicians have no place in Texas and do not represent our way of life. I need your help to build momentum so we can defeat everyone in our way of winning this race – like Robert Francis O'Rourke.

I have traveled around the state of Texas and I have heard your concerns. We need to SECURE our border and keep the illegals invading our state OUT.

Robert Francis O'Rourke wants to further OPEN OUR BORDERS, TAKE AWAY OUR GUNS, and DESTROY OUR CONSERVATIVE WAY OF LIFE.

This might be out of touch with Texas, but unfortunately Robert Francis has the help from national donors who want to see Texas turn blue. I am counting on YOU. Will you donate to my campaign for Governor of Texas so we can make sure a radical socialist – like Robert Francis – never becomes Governor?

Steadfast and Loyal,

The Tyranny of Groupthink

Forward
A Freedom House assessment of “Freedom on the Net” reports that Cuba remains one of the world’s most repressive environments for the internet and information and communication technologies (ICTs). The Cuban government splits access to the web between a national intranet and the global internet. Most Cubans have access only to the national intranet which consists of an in-country e-mail system, a Cuban encyclopedia, websites that are supportive of the government and the like.
There are only two internet service providers, both owned by the state and surveillance is extensive. It is estimated that less than three percent of the population (mostly government officials) has access to the internet. Whatever connectivity is available costs around $12.00 per hour in a country where the average monthly salary is less than $20.00 per month.

Additionally, Cuba is also one of the few countries to have issued laws and regulations explicitly outlawing certain online activities. Decree-Law 209, states, among other restrictions, that “e-mail messages must not jeopardize national security”.  Resolution 127 on network security bans the spreading of information that is against the social interest, the integrity of the people, or national security. Resolution 56/1999 provides that all material intended for publication on the internet must first be approved by the National Registry of Serial Publications. And Resolution 92/2003 prohibits service providers from granting acess to individuals who are not approved by the government and requires the providers to enable only domestic chat services, not international ones.

Underscoring the country’s self imposed intellectual isolation, Boris Moreno, Cuba’s Deputy Minister for Information Science and Communication, noted that “Cuba is not concerned with the individual connection of its citizens to the internet.  We use the internet to defend the Revolution…”

The extent of Cuba’s political cyber police efforts and  its concern with controls over information that characterize the tyrannical pursuit of intellectual autarky was vividly captured in a leaked 54-minute video of a conference identified as “Enemy Campaigns and the Politics of Confrontation with Counter Revolutionary Groups”. The video shows a June 2010 lecture delivered behind-closed-doors to an audience in military uniforms, mostly Interior Ministry officers (The Interior Ministry is in charge of Cuba’s domestic security). The topic: the dangers internet access poses to the government.

The lecturer, counter-intelligence cybernetic specialist officer Eduardo Fontes Suárez, defines the internet as a field of battle that the government must use to its advantage. He boasts of a new special section created within the Interior Ministry to work against bloggers. He warns of the dangers of social networks such as Facebook and Twitter labeling them “classic combat networks” and citing as examples how Iran’s “Green Revolution” and Ukraine’s “Orange Revolution were “created” when social networks were used to call people to street protests. He calls the internet “the field of battle” and highlights, in military jargon, the risks to the Cuban government of bloggers and youth groups.

The Cuban government has been remarkably successful in sealing the consciousness of the Cuban people from the outside world with a doctrine of intellectual isolationism in support of a self-sufficient and all encompassing revolutionary dogma of intellectual autarky. Fidel Castro made this intellectual autarky policy explicitly clear in a 1961 speech titled “A word to the intellectuals” in which he famously warned that “Within the Revolution everything, against the Revolution, nothing”.

But this pursuit of intellectual autarky has also produced a classic case of what social psychologist Irving Janis called “groupthink”, a condition that will ultimately prove to be the regime’s undoing. Groupthink is a type of thought characteristic of cohesive in-groups whose members try to minimize conflict and reach consensus without critically testing, analyzing, and evaluating ideas.  Decision-makers affected by groupthink ignore alternatives and tend to follow irrational programs of action.

A case in point is General Castro’s economic program formulated, in his words, “to save Cuba from the economic abyss” outlined in a 32 page document that comprises the economic platform of the VI Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba.
A centerpiece of General Castro’s program is the firing of up to 1,300,000 government workers -something in the order of 20 percent of the workforce- and allowing them to make a living by becoming self-employed outside the government sector. In the Cuban version of Orwellian doublespeak, the measures are labeled as an “actualization of socialism.”

Apparently, the Cuban government is betting on the resourcefulness and entrepreneurship of the Cuban people to somehow make up for the inefficiencies of the state sector and to do so without acess to cash, credit, raw materials, equipment, technology or any of the inputs necessary to produce goods and services. The dismissal measure further assumes that everyone is temperamentally suited to be an entrepreneur and able to make a living in fields that may be far afar from their work experience and professional training.

Groupthink is also evident in how those selected for dismissal will be chosen; seniority, patronage, friendship, ideology, or some form of capitalist or socialist merit. According to the plan announced by the government, a commission of experts will decide the optimal number of personnel required for each state entity and specially trained workers’ commissions will decide the positions to be eliminated.

But perhaps most illustrative of the Cuban government’s groupthink is the specificity  and degree of desire control with which  the Cuban economic “reformers” have decided to allow those being fired to solicit permits to become self employed in activities such as:

Trade number 23-the purchases and sale of used books; 29-attendants of public bathrooms (presumably for tips); 34-pruning of palm trees (apparently other trees will still be pruned by the state); 49-wrapping buttons with fabric; 61-shoe shinning; 62- cleaning of spark plugs; 69-typists; 110-box spring repairs (not to be confused with number 116); 116-mattress repairs; 124-umbrella repairs; 125-refilling of disposable cigarette lighters; 150-tarot cards fortune telling; 156-dandy (technical definition unknown, male escort?); 158-natural fruits peeling (separate from 142-selling fruits in kiosks).

One does not have to be an economist to realize that this bizarre list of permitted private service sector activities will not drive the economic development of the country.

In his economic dreamland of surrealist juxtapositions and non sequitur General Castro and his team believe that this is the way to save the communist system. This surrealistic disconnect flows from Cuba’s doctrine of intellectual isolationism where Cubans are unable to receive information freely and exchange ideas openly.

In 1978 Deng Xiaoping recognized that this inbreeding groupthink problem would undermine his economic reforms and ended China’s self-imposed intellectual autarky. In Cuba, long-held Marxists economic assumptions will not be swapped for another set of economic beliefs without inspired democratic leadership.
