The IDF is preparing for a possible terror attack by the Islamic State (ISIS) terror organization in the Golan, and is also maintaining a high level of alertness on its northern border with Lebanon, fearing an imminent attack by Hezbollah.
The Syrian terror group Shuhada al-Yarmouk, which operates in the Southern Syrian Golan Heights on Israel’s border, recently joined forces with ISIS, intelligence has revealed. This development significantly heightens ISIS’ presence on Israel’s border.
The IDF is preparing for a broad array of scenarios, including infiltration attempts and rocket attacks.
In its assessment, the IDF thinks that the terror organizations are too engrossed in the Syrian civil war to launch attacks on Israel, but they think that this can change in time, and are preparing for all eventualities.
The area in which the terror organization operates has been the site of heavy fighting between Assad’s army and rebel factions, and is currently mostly controlled by the rebels. The various factions also fight amongst themselves and struggle for control.
The intense fighting has, at times, spilled over into Israel.
On Wednesday, IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot toured the border in the Golan Heights along with GOC Northern Command, Maj.-Gen. Aviv Kochavi and Galilee Division Commander Brig.-Gen. Amir Baram to receive an updated assessment of the situation and review the preparation first hand.
