(Bizpac Review) - Two Republican senators are outraged and demanding answers to why hundreds of thousands of veterans are now essentially barred from owning firearms.
As of now, veterans who have been assigned as a fiduciary trustee are reported to the FBI as being “mentally defective,” Guns.com reported.
Beginning in December of 2015, more than 260,000 veterans have been reported to the database which basically makes it impossible for them to own a gun, according to Guns.com.
That has drawn the ire of Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Sen. Chuck Grassley and Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee Chairman Sen. Johnny Isakson.
“Our military heroes risked their lives to protect and defend this country and all that we stand for, including our most basic constitutional rights,” Grassley wrote in a statement. “Now the very agency created to serve them is jeopardizing their Second Amendment rights through an erroneous reading of gun regulations. The VA’s careless approach to our veterans’ constitutional rights is disgraceful.”
The two Republican senators penned a pair of letters, one to the U.S. Dept. of Veteran’s Affairs Secretary Robert McDonald and a second to the subcommittee that oversees the agency’s funding, questioning the constitutionality of the practice.
“The use of the VA regulation, adopted for a totally unrelated purpose, is suspect, especially in light of the Supreme Court holding that the Second Amendment is a fundamental right,” the letter to McDonald read. “That holding changed the legal calculus by which a regulatory scheme can survive constitutional scrutiny and it is not clear how these regulations would fare under that increased scrutiny.”
