Wednesday, February 22, 2017 Secretary General of the OAS will receive the 1st Oswaldo Payá Award "Liberty and Life” 2016 in Havana.
The Latin America Youth Network for Democracy and the Cuban citizen initiative Cuba Decide are honored to invite all Cuba Decide supporters to the award ceremony of the 1st Oswaldo Payá Award "Liberty and Life” 2016 to Secretary General Luis Almagro, OAS.
We are pleased to recognize the honorable Mr. Luis Almagro, Secretary General of the Organization of American States and, in a posthumous manner, Don Patricio Aylwin distinguished with an honorable mention to be received in his name, by his daughter, the former parliamentarian and former Chilean minister of foreign affairs, Mariana Aylwin.
The ceremony will take place Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at 11:00 am at the Payá residence located at:
221 Peñón Street, between Ayuntamiento St. and Monasterio St., El Cerro (Manila Park), Havana City, Cuba.
The Oswaldo Payá Award "Liberty and Life” Award is a recognition by the LatinAmerica Youth Network for Democracy, in collaboration with the Fundación para la Democracia Panamericana, confers on individuals or institutions whose career or specific action has been outstanding in the promotion and defense of human rights, life and democracy.
The distinction honors the life, thought and legacy of the Cuban dissident, Oswaldo Paya who was assassinated in 2012.
The Latin America Youth Network for Democracy brings together members of civil society, political parties and student organizations in more than 20 countries in the region. All committed to defending and strengthening democracy, denouncing abuses of power by Latin American governments, proposing and managing initiatives that contribute to the consolidation of the rule of law.
Mr. Luis Almagro is recognized for his actions in the face of some of the most critical human rights violations carried out by governments in the region, specifically in the case of Venezuela. In addition he is being recognized for his effective contribution to the OAS by reinforcing his commitment to the values described in the Inter-American Charter that recognize political plurality, which has been denied to the Cuban people for more than 58 years.
