    Interferon, Cuba’s so-called wonder drug for COVID-19

Part III of the series Cuba in the time of coronavirus:
    exploiting a global crisis.
“A drug produced by Cuba, the human recombinant interferon alpha 2b, has been hyped since early March 2020 in media reports, blogs, and social media posts all over the world as the “most effective” treatment or “the cure” for the new coronavirus product. Many glowing reports convey a misleading idea that the drug was “developed in Cuba” or “created” by its biotechnicians. In fact, the drug has long been produced by numerous laboratories and companies around the world and Cuba’s version was developed in the 1980s thanks to generous contributions by scientists and institutions from the United States, Finland, and other countries. Cuba’s product, generically known as IFNrec and marketed as is marketed as Heberon Alfa R, is merely “one of the 30 products chosen by the Chinese National Health Commission to treat the covid-19.” Assuming it is safe and of the highest quality ⎯unverified propositions⎯ it is most likely just a cheaper product thanks to much lower production costs.”

The effectiveness of Cuba’s interferon for the treatment of COVID-19 remains to be proven, yet its adverse side effects are well-documented; in fact, scientists are reporting that it is more harmful than useful in the treatment of the new coronavirus. Nonetheless, Cuba’s huge intelligence and propaganda apparatus has embarked on a massive propaganda campaign to sell the drug with the help of influencers worldwide. The Cuban interferon, produced in a joint venture with China, is part of a pandemic package-deal the Cuban government sells as emergency medical brigades with exploited Cuban health workers.

The following one is from selection for the month of May:
    Jaime Parera-Perán
Died at age 27 on May 12, 1965 at State Security headquarters of Holguín Cuba, presumably of asphyxia during torture with electroshocks. Jaime and his family had been staunch revolutionaries against the Batista dictatorship but soon became disaffected with the Castro government. Jaime resigned from his post as head of the radio and TV station for State Security in Holguín, refusing to continue collaborating with the government. He was arrested and held incommunicado at for three months, accused of being a “counter-revolutionary.” One day, the police informed the family that he had died and that same night an ambulance delivered his body with no explanation or death certificate. A forensic specialist and family friend who examined the body found that his hands were burned and he had swallowed his tongue. He left a wife, a six months old son, and a three year old daughter.
