“YOUNG CUBA”

“Cuban Institutions and Groups” is a new series of weekly publications highlighting the principal political, economic, social and cultural organizations that developed during Cuba’s colonial and national period.   CUBAN INSTITUTIONS AND GROUPS JOVEN CUBA (“YOUNG CUBA”)   A clandestine revolutionary organization founded in 1934 by Antonio Guiteras Holmes, interior minister in the Grau San Martín administration, which had just been overthrown by Fulgencio Batista.  The organization adopted urban violence as a tactic to cripple the government of Batista’s nominee, Carlos Mendieta, and was particularly involved in the General Strike of 1935. Jaime Greinstein (1916-1934) a Cuban-Jewish revolutionary, also known as Jaime Angulo Terry, a sympathizer of Joven Cuba, was killed by the Batista regime – the first Cuban during the republic to be executed by a military firing squad.
