“Bits of Cuban History” is a new series of weekly publications highlighting historical events and information from Cuba’s colonial and national periods. We hope you enjoy this new publication. Following is the 34th in this new series. | BITS OF CUBAN HISTORY Revolution of 1933
Triggered by the overthrow of Machado and the Sergeants’ revolt, the revolution brought to power the idealistic young “Generation of 1930” in a revolutionary government led by university professor Ramón Grau San Martín and whose military muscle was vested in Sergeant Fulgencio Batista. The students thought they now had an opportunity to implement the many notions of radical reform they had been striving for since 1927. Unfortunately, their utopian idea of government disintegrated shortly after the revolution’s triumph in 1934. Ten years of puppet presidents under Batista’s control followed.
