Grover Norquist: Tea Party was the ‘Guardrail’ that Kept this Country From Economic Disaster
(TPNN) – American for Tax Reform President Grover Norquist recently sat down with TPNN to discuss the influential group’s efforts to create lower taxes and reduce government inefficiency.
Norquist explained that his group stands by a policy of keeping lawmakers from raising taxes and they do that through the enforcement of the ATR’s Taxpayer Protection Pledge that lawmakers are encouraged to sign, promising not to raise taxes.
Capitol Hill Show host Tim Constantine noted that in 2010, the Tea Party swept the House and gained traction in the Senate and wondered how the Republican lawmakers who signed the pledge have stuck to their pledges.
“The biggest challenge we’ve had is to stop the hemorrhaging of all the massive spending that Obama and Pelosi and Reid had put together. With only control of the House, there was a limit to what a Republican Tea Party House of Representatives could accomplish. But on the big issue- when Obama came and wanted two-and-a-half trillion in a higher debt ceiling, the republicans took out of that negotiation one: a two-and-a-half trillion spending restraint. Spending which had shot-up to 24% of the economy, fell back to 20.5%.So, they were the guardrail that kept us from running over the edge and going into complete disaster. We don’t get a lot of wins because a Democratic Senate can say ‘no,’ the president can say ‘no.’ But every once in awhile, the debt ceiling and some of these other issues… the president needs something and the House, the Republican Tea Party majority, won a big, big victory.”
Norquist’s influential organization has served as heavy hand on the tiller of conservatism at a time when politicians are inclined to say anything to get elected. With Americans for Tax Reform and other similar groups, the job of lying to the American people is made much, much tougher.
