(The Blaze) - A frustrated House Democrat snapped Thursday night and called a top Republican a “coward” for refusing to engage in a debate over GOP plans to fund the Department of Homeland Security.
Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) was asking Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) about how the House was going to handle the issue on Friday, since DHS funding expires then. Republicans are considering a three-week funding extension.
“We have been now… six weeks leaving the Department of Homeland Security twisting in the wind,” Hoyer started, after which he was interrupted by grumbling by Republicans. The GOP has pointed out that Democrats — not Republicans — have been blocking progress on a DHS bill for weeks in the Senate.
McCarthy then took control of the floor by trying to wrap up the debate, and said the House would finish its work by Friday.
“This House has taken action to make sure that DHS is fully funded. We did our part, and I yield back,” McCarthy said, signaling the discussion was over.
A CNN reporter said soon afterwards, she ran into Hoyer, and Hoyer said he apologized to McCarthy for his comment.
