Dr. Mauricelm-Lei Millere, a former adviser to the New Black Panther Party in Ferguson, sparked a firestorm of criticism when he issued a series of tweets saying that blacks must kill police officers in "self defense." He responded Thursday with a tweet calling his critics ignorant white racists who praise the killing of blacks by cops.
"Look at all the racism and ignorance of my detractors," he tweeted. "The white racist is so violent till they praise racist killings but ridicule defense." But the tweets that started it all said in no uncertain terms that blacks "must" kill officers the same way one might kill a snake.
"If Freddie Gray's killers walk you will see cops being killed in broad daylight," he tweeted earlier in the week. "Many are being killed now. In self defense blacks must kill," he added, echoing a statement made in 2012 by former New Black Panther leader Malik Zulu Shabazz. He followed that up with another tweet calling for revolution if officers charged in the death of Freddie Gray are not punished.
"If Gray's killers are set free, every blue snake will drop like flies under a squatter! America Is Entering Another phase of Revolt," he said. But he wasn't finished. "If you can find the snake that bit you in the garden, any old snake in blue will do! Kill in self defense the one in blue who's killing you," he added in a third tweet.
His calls for death and revolution did not sit well with many on Twitter. Most reacted with shock and anger. One person called Millere a "Dollar Store version" of Louis Farrakhan, the head of the Nation of Islam.
"I will defend police officers with lethal force if necessary," one person said. "You may want to rethink your stance." Some offered similar advise and several suggested he speak with the FBI.
Others wondered if Millere's call for violence included black officers. "So you are calling for the death and any and all Police?" one person asked. "So when blacks start being killed left and right for trying to kill cops, that helps the movement?" another person asked.
One webpage says Millere, a psychotherapist, is credited as the founder of Manic Aggression Personality Disorder. "No doctor I know would ever advocate violence," one person said on Twitter. Another person wondered how Millere could reconcile "being a Minister and psychotherapist with a Black National."
Last year, we reported that Millere said on Facebook that Darren Wilson, the Ferguson, Missouri, police officer who shot Michael Brown, was wanted, "dead or alive." One day later, the Anti-Defamation Leaguesaid, Millere wrote: “When you find Darren Wilson you know what to do! Whoever finds him knows what must be done! Take everything that he took from Mike Brown.” He also called for "violence against Martin Baker, an African-American congressional candidate who publicly supported due process for Darren Wilson," the ADL added.
