TRANSITIONAL JUSTICE AND THE GOAL OF CUBAN NATIONAL RECONCILIATION
Last July 28, 2016, Cuba Archive / Archivo Cuba organized in Miami a panel on transitional justice during the annual conference of the Association for the Study of the Cuban Economy. See the 15 minute presentations (in Spanish) here.
When a democracy under the rule of law replaces a repressive regime guilty of massive human rights violations, the most effective way to promote national reconciliation is to guarantee a comprehensive and effective transItional justice process. Transition lessons from around the world in the last half-century indicate that such a process should encompass truth-seeking, accountability, reparations, and mechanisms to avoid repeating the abuses. Because each society must find its own combination of solutions, an informed, open, and transparent debate is necessary to set the foundations for a legitimate process that can lead to social peace and consolidation of the new democracy.
