Someone drew a swastika in a Northeastern University dormitory in Boston, Massachusetts. Unfortunately, this is only the latest in a string of anti-Semitic acts on American campuses.
Anti-Semitism is growing on university campuses, and this ugly phenomenon was experienced most recently at Northeastern University in Boston.
The campus was defaced on Sunday. A swastika, the Nazi symbol, was found drawn on a marker board in the common space of the International Village dormitory at around 1:30 a.m.
Northeastern University President Joseph Aoun reacted angrily to the discovery, calling it a hateful act of anti-Semitism and condemning it in the “strongest possible terms.” In an email to the campus community, he said that “these actions are completely antithetical to the values of our university and all that we stand for.”
Campus police are investigating.
Northeastern dealt with a similar incident in November when swastikas were drawn on flyers publicizing a lecture by an Israeli military official. At the time, Aoun said the vandalism was “completely unacceptable” and emphasized the university’s lack of tolerance “for anti-Semitism, prejudice and hate crimes of any kind, including this incident.”
In December 2012, two students confessed to vandalizing a menorah (Hanukkah lamp) on campus. The incident occurred during Hanukkah, and although the university declined to disclose details about the vandalism, administrators deemed it to be an act of religious intolerance.
