On Sunday, actor James Morrison issued a tweet excoriating GOP presidential candidate Ted Cruz over a story that claims the Texas Republican wants the office of Veterans Affairs and the Pentagon to sell cookies to raise funds, much like the Girl Scouts. There's only one problem, though. The story is fake.
"How bout we fund wars this way instead, 'Patriot'? ~ Ted Cruz: Vets Should Sell Cookies For Funding, Like Girl Scouts," he tweeted. "Veteran Girl Scout Cookie Sell-A-Thon may catch on with those vets not offended to the core," Morrison said in another tweet. "Until they turn into lesbians, that is."
At the bottom of the article referenced by Morrison, however, is this short note: "The post Ted Cruz: Vets Should Sell Cookies For Funding, Like Girl Scouts appeared first on National Report." The National Report is a well-known satire site that has fooled a number of people with its stories.
Morrison was soundly raked over the coals for the tweet. "You're not very bright, are you?" one person asked. "You didn't look at the 'news ticker' on that site did you," another person said.
"How embarrassing for you," a Twitter critic said. "Duped by a fake news story...but a good apology always helps...be sure to post one..."
"Were you born this stupid or do actually have to work at it?" one person asked Morrison. "James thought the Cruz article was real so nothing is unbelievable," another person added.
About an hour later, Morrison acknowledged he fell for a fake story, and decided to attack Fox News and conservatives instead of issuing an apology. "I'll put my 'actor James Morrison duped by fake Cruz girl scout cookie story' against your 'Republicans duped by fake pol Ted Cruz' any day," he tweeted. "Color me embarrassed. Cruz satire got me. Now being trolled by high schoolers who don't have sense 2 B embarrassed 4 actually supporting him," he said in another tweet.
"And yet I bet you think Fox News is actual news," he said to one person who took exception to his characterization. "What's your excuse for being taken in by an obvious satire?"
Morrison, Twitchy said, wasn't alone in falling for the fake story. David Nelson, whose Twitter bio says he’s the news anchor at KWQC-TV, also fell for the National Report story as did Hugo award winning writer John Scalzi. Nelson deleted his tweet after Cruz Communications Director Amanda Carpenter reached out to him.
"You have been duped by a fake report," Carpenter said. "You should know better. Check with us!!"
This isn't the first time Morrison has angered conservatives on Twitter. Last year, he said that Christians shouldn't run for public office. "If you're a politician and believe in God first, that's all good. Just don't run for government office, run for church office," he said.
After being soundly criticized, he played the victim card. "That freedom of speech thing is only for those you agree with. Saw that recently with the Duck Patriarch," he tweeted, apparently thinking that his point of view should be immune from criticism.
In February 2011, we first said that liberalism, at its core, is an ideology of rage and hate. Sadly, liberals like Morrison prove that assertion correct on just about any given day.
