Let me say this. I spent over 20 years selling broadcast television, and before I started a business about 10 years ago outside of broadcast television, I was in national television advertising sales. That’s selling big stations in big markets to agency buyers representing huge accounts. Not network television, but campaigns that appeared on many stations.
Rules for the Boycott – to Make it Truly Effective:
- Don’t turn your cable box on FOX NEWS EVER. Even peaking gets picked up.
- DO TURN ON THE STRONGEST COMPETITOR – AND LEAVE IT ON. Change channels about once an hour for a moment or two, and then go back to the strongest competitor.
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT, YOU ASK?
Let’s say that these stations have these ratings:
FOX NEWS: 10 share
CNN NEWS: 5 share
MSNBC NEWS: 4 share
CNN NEWS: 5 share
MSNBC NEWS: 4 share
If the universe is just 19 viewers, simply tuning out fox for three of the viewers still leaves Fox as number one:
FOX NEWS: 7 share
CNN NEWS: 5 share
MSNBC NEWS: 4 share
(3 are tuned out or are watching other networks)
CNN NEWS: 5 share
MSNBC NEWS: 4 share
(3 are tuned out or are watching other networks)
If the universe is 19 viewers and the viewers that left Fox went to CNN in total, this is what happens:
FOX NEWS: 7 share
CNN NEWS: 8 share <<< NUMBER ONE!
MSNBC NEWS: 4 share
CNN NEWS: 8 share <<< NUMBER ONE!
MSNBC NEWS: 4 share
As you can see logically, flipping between MSNBC and CNN is not good enough. Pick one and stick with it. I am doing MORNING JOE on MSNBC in the mornings. Later it is ONLY CNN.
