A new tunnel location device is based on proprietary technologies developed by Israel’s military industry. It includes a series of sensors that send data back to a system that uses algorithms to examine it. This allows the end-user to spot the underground tunnels accurately.
Prime Minister Netanyahu on Monday announced a new technological breakthrough in Israel’s effort to locate Hamas underground terror tunnels. He spoke after the announcement of the discovery of a terror tunnel reaching 90 feet into Israel from the Gaza Strip, the first located since Operation Protective Edge.
The new technology has been dubbed the “Iron Dome for Tunnels.”
According to a report by Israel’s Yedioth Aharonoth on Monday night, the tunnel location feature is based on proprietary technologies developed by Israel’s military industry. It includes a series of sensors that send data back to a system that uses algorithms to examine it. This allows the end-user to spot the underground tunnels accurately, with no false readings.
The development cost all of $60 million and no one else but Israel has it.
Several Israeli analysts have questioned whether this new technology will deter the Hamas leadership from their ceaseless military build-up against Israel, or will it drive them to attack Israel in the near future out of fear that their tunnel network will be destroyed?
Meanwhile, the IDF is investing in finding an effective, permanent solution to the tunnels problem. It will include an upper fence above ground, a lower fence underground and ongoing operations along the border with Gaza. The IDF has also been training Special Forces in raiding tunnels and confronting Hamas diggers or terrorists. At any given time, the IDF has about 100 engineering machines along the border.
The IDF stated on Tuesday that, a new barrier system will be ready to protect residents of communities located near the Gaza Strip from an array of threats, above ground and underneath, will be fully operational in two years.
The IDF said that the new system will include obstacles that use engineering and technological means, in addition to a border fence.
