Donald Trump: I’m so Rich I Can’t be Bought
(Politico) – Donald Trump has a new campaign talking point: He’s so rich that he can’t be bought, unlike those other candidates.
Trump, the billionaire businessman and 2016 Republican presidential contender, has begun lacing his speeches and public statements with jabs at lobbyists and special interests — like this tweet from Tuesday afternoon:
Earlier in the day, he also used the line to bash Florida’s former Gov. Jeb Bush for holding a posh fundraising event in the Hamptons. Trump said the attendees at the fundraiser were “the donors and the lobbyists and those with — the special interest people” who, he suggested, control Bush.
It’s a critique Trump shares with politicians like Sen. Elizabeth Warren, the liberal firebrand who often rails against the undue influence of lobbyists and special interest in halls of power in Washington. And it’s unusual for him in that, unlike his jeremiads against Mexican “rapists” coming across the border, it has the ring of truth.
Last weekend, even as he treated attendees at a campaign rally in Iowa to a catered picnic lunch of pulled-pork sandwiches, Trump trotted out the same line of attack.
“They will be bombarded by their lobbyists that donated a lot of money to them,” Trump said of the other Republican candidates. “Again, Jeb raised $107 million dollars, OK? They’re not putting that money up because it’s a wonderful charity.”
Trump, in that speech, held himself up as the only pure candidate in a race full of politicians with dirty hands.
“So their lobbyists, their special interests and their donors will start calling President Bush, President Clinton, President Walker. Pretty much whoever is president other than me. Other than me. And they’ll say: ‘You have to do it. They gave you a million dollars to your campaign,” Trump said, describing how the other candidates, if elected president, might be pushed to build a “two-and-a-half-billion-dollar plant in Mexico.”
“And the plant will be built in Mexico and we just lost lots of plants all over our country,” Trump said.
In an interview with Newsmax magazine earlier in July, Trump said the rest of the field is “controlled by lobbyists, controlled by their donors, they’re controlled by special interests.”
“If you are looking at making our country again, they’re not going to do it,” Trump said.
