'We may not feel like we are at war with Daesh but they are coming after us,' Mr Abbott said.
'We are working at every level to keep Australia safe. All you need for terrorism these days is a knife, a flag, a camera phone and a victim.
'This has nothing to do with god, nothing to do with religion and nothing to do with building a better world.'
Mr Abbott's comments came after Foreign Minister Julie Bishop condemned the attacks on Friday night and Saturday morning.

Ms Bishop said Australian officials were still being briefed on the string of incidents, but that it appeared all three were terrorist attacks.
'If the early reports are true, this is another horrific reminder of the brutality of these terrorist organisations that are attacking civilians in the most violent and barbaric way,' Ms Bishop said.
'It reminds us that we must be ever vigilant about the possibility of a terrorist attack in Australia and that is why the Australian Government is expanding our security, law enforcement intelligence agencies' capacities to deal with these risks.'

On Saturday morning, Ms Bishop said Australia 'stands in solidarity' with the countries and victims caught in the attacks, and that she was' not aware' of any Australians involved.
She also condemned the attacks in the 'strongest possible terms'.
It comes after 37 people were killed and another 36 were injured when a gunman opened fire on a beach in Tunisia.
The assassin is believed to be Seifeddine Yacoubi, 23, an aviation student from the Tunisian city of Kairouan.

The gunman prowled the streets of Sousse, a popular resort town, firing into crowds of tourists with an AK47.
The massacre took place at about the same time as the bombing of a Shi'ite mosque in Kuwait, where 25 worshippers were killed, and another attack on a United States-owned factory in France in which a man was beheaded.
The violence comes just days after ISIS urged its fanatic followers to 'make Ramadan a month of calamities' and rise up against the 'non-believers'.
