(Newsmax) – GOP candidate Dr. Ben Carson responded to the Supreme Court’s divisive 5-4 ruling in favor of gay marriage by calling on Congress to protect and respect “deeply held religious views.”
“While I strongly disagree with the Supreme Court’s decision, their ruling is now the law of the land,” said Carson. “The government must never force Christians to violate their religious beliefs.
“I support same-sex civil unions,” Carson said. “But to me, and millions like me, marriage is a religious service not a government form.”
Donald Trump came out swinging, in familiar style, taking to Twitter to blast the court.
Trump tweeted:
The tweet was a clear swipe at Jeb Bush, Trump’s fellow Republican presidential nominee. Former President George W. Bush appointed Chief Justice John Roberts to the Supreme Court.
But Trump was mistaken in faulting Roberts, because the chief justice strongly opposed the majority in its 5-4 decision, which was written by Anthony Kennedy.
Trump was probably referring to the court as a whole, and may have tweeted too soon.
